Distribution : Barbosa Rodrigues, who discovered and described this species, never said where he had found it. In the first half of 2001 however Selenipedium vanillocarpum was rediscovered in a mountainous area in Brazil, in the State of Bahia, at a height of 700 m above sea level.

History : The man who originally found and described the species, Barbosa Rodrigues, never told where the plants were found. For his description he used a dried specimen.
